Plants That Don't Need Soil to Thrive

Water, sunlight and soil, the three vital needs of a plant to grow abundantly. But there are some exceptions that grow, thrive and even multiply in the absence of these. Houseplants like succulents, string of pearls, and begonia need little to no water to survive. English ivy, Chinese evergreen and bromeliad are low-light indoor plants that require far less light than others.

Now, for all the ones with a green thumb, who love to grow without getting their hands dirty, there are myriad plants that thrive without soil too. Spruce up the indoors or bedeck the backyard garden, here’s a list of no-hassle plants to avoid a mess and those unwanted hovering soil insects.

Lucky Bamboo

Lucky Bamboo

Dracaena sanderiana aka lucky bamboo is a harbinger of fortune and prosperity. Making it a common sight in most households. It’s nearly indestructible and like every other marginal plant, it can survive with its roots in water constantly.

To start the process, look for a plant with bright green leaves since a yellow or brownish colour denotes an unhealthy sign. Take a container, fill it up with enough pebbles or stones to stabilize it in place and fill it up with 1 to 3 inches of water. And voila! Luck never looked this mess-free and beautiful.

Orchids

Orchids

Fragrant and diverse, the beauty of orchids speaks for itself. They’re epiphytes which means they grow on other plants instead of soil. But that doesn’t make them parasites because their roots are covered with a squishy membrane that sucks up water from the atmosphere.

Add to the vibrance of your home by simply placing them in a container and filling it up with stones or moss. Make sure to provide the roots with a moist environment consistently to enable their growth and well-being.

Paperwhites

Paperwhites

A variety of daffodils, these fragrant plants are both exquisite and charming. Additionally, these low-maintenance bulbs are happy to grow without any potting soil. They do not need added fertilizer or other inputs to bloom indoors as winter houseplants.

So you have two methods to make the most of this beautiful plant. They can be sprouted in a shallow dish planted with pebbles or they can be sprouted in water alone using a bulb vase. Both, easy to follow and easier to maintain.
